Abstract

  • The number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in South Sumatra Province in March 2014 was 1,100,829 or 13.91 percent. Compared to the poor population in September 2013 which amounted to 1,104,569 people (14.06 percent), meaning the number of poor people fell by 3,740 people or 0.15%.
  • During the period September 2013 - March 2014, the poor population in urban areas fell by 7,607 people, or by 0.35 percent. In rural areas it also experienced a decrease of 3,867 people, or by 0.04 percent.
  • The composition of the poor by area of ​​residence (urban and rural) has not changed much, with the majority (66.65 percent) of the poor being in rural areas.
  • The poverty line in March 2014 in the province of South Sumatra was IDR 298,824, - 2.67 percent greater than September 2013. The poverty line in urban areas was IDR 336,929, while the poverty line in rural areas was IDR 277,509. Compared to September 2013, the poverty line increased in both urban and rural areas, increasing by 2.62% and 2.72%.
  • In the period September 2013 - March 2014, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) both showed decreases. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to get closer to the poverty line and the inequality of expenditure of the poor narrows.
