Abstract

  • The number of poor people (residents who are below the Poverty Line) in South Sumatra Province in September 2012 was 1,042,035 people or 13.48 percent. Compared to the poor population in March 2012 which amounted to 1,057,031 (13.78 percent), meaning the number of poor people fell by 14,996 people.
  • During the March-September 2012 period, the population was poor in the area cities fell by 21,013 people, or by 0.87 percent. In rural areas it experienced an increase of 6,017 people, or by 0.01 percent.
  • The composition of the poor according to the region of residence (urban and rural areas) did not change much, where most (64.72 percent) the poor are in rural areas.
  • The poverty line in South Sumatra province is Rp. 259,668. The poverty line in urban areas is Rp. 296,933, while the poverty line in rural areas is Rp. 238,901. Compared to March 2012, the poverty line has increased both in urban and rural areas.
  • In the period March - September 2012, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) both show downward trend. This indicates that the average expenditure poor people tend to get closer to the poverty line and inequality of expenditure of the poor population narrows.
