Abstract

  • he number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in the province of South Sumatra in March 2013 was 1,110,373 or 14.24 percent. Compared to the poor population in September 2012 which amounted to 1,042,035 people (13.48 percent), meaning the number of poor people rose as many as 68,338 people or 0.76%.
  • During the period September 2012 - March 2013, the poor population in urban areas rose by 17,134 people, or by 0.48 percent. In rural areas it also experienced an increase of 15,204 people, or by 0.92 percent.
  • The composition of the poor according to the area of ​​residence (urban and rural) has not changed much, with the majority (65.35 percent) of the poor being in rural areas.
  • The poverty line in March 2013 in the province of South Sumatra was IDR 273,682, - 5.40 percent greater than in September 2012. The poverty line in urban areas was IDR 311,606, while the poverty line in rural areas was IDR 252,497. Compared to September 2012, the poverty line has increased in both urban and rural areas, increasing by 4.94% and 5.69%.
  • In the period September 2012 - March 2013, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) both showed increases. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to move further away from the poverty line and the inequality of spending by the poor widens.
